Professor Chen Yong
Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Deputy Director-General of the Seismology Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
Vice President of the Chinese Geophysical Society
Vice President of the Chinese Seismological Society
Professor Chen Yong, an internationally renowned geophysicist, was born in Jiangsu Province in 1942. He has been working in the field of seismology and rock physics since his graduation from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1965. After the disastrous earthquake in Xingtai, he spent several years on the site to conduct seismological observation and study the physical theory of seismic focus. In the early 1970s, he embarked on the study of rock properties under high temperature and high pressure. He revealed the effect of the stress path on rock properties and developed the pulse-laser holographic interferometry which was applied to rock deformation measurements. From 1978 to 1980, he was in the US concentrating on the research of thermal cracking of rocks and treatment of nuke rubbish. His research results on the thermal cracking have been widely adopted in international safety regulations of nuclear plants.

Professor Chen’s research has focused on seismic hazard assessment and seismic risk analysis since the 1990s. The joint working group of IASPEI and IAEE under his leadership made significant achievements on the research of earthquake prediction by integrating seismology, engineering, economics as well as social sciences. The world seismic hazard and risk maps, compiled by him, have found their use in the relevant UN agencies and insurance business.

Many of Professor Chen’s academic treaties and monographs have made worldwide impact. To name some, they are “The Tangshan Great Earthquake of 1976 – an Anatomy of Disaster”, “Rock Physics” and “Seismic Hazard and Risk”. In 1993 he was elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Chen has been a very energetic leader in the academic field. He was Director of the Institute of Geophysics, Deputy Director-General of the State Bureau of Seismology, Chairman of the Commission on Earthquake Prediction and Hazard of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior, and Executive Director of the International Seismological Center. He is currently Vice President of the Chinese Geophysical Society, Vice President of the Chinese Seismological Society, Deputy Director-General of the Seismology Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

Elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993.
