International Symposium on Earthquake Seismology and July 5 to 9, 2009, Beijing, China
Scope of the Symposium This meeting was originally proposed by the Department for Earthquake Monitoring and Prediction of China Earthquake Administration in spring 2008, agreed by the Seismological Society of China, and discussed among international colleagues during the APEC Collaboration on Earthquake Simulation (ACES) Workshop in Australia. Earthquake seismology was designed as the main topic, in connection to the Ceremony of the Publication of Keiiti Aki¡¯s textbook ¡°Earthquake Seismology¡± (in Chinese and English). The devastating Wenchuan Ms8.0 earthquake on May 12, 2008, just during the ACES workshop, further highlighted the importance for an international discussion on the seismology, geology, and geodynamics of great earthquakes, their predictability, and how to make full use of the present knowledge and techniques to reduce earthquake disasters. The earthquake has actually expanded the scope of the meeting and enhanced the need to organize the discussion. Observations and studies conducted since recent years on the global scale have made it possible to have a close look at the seismogenesis, earthquake preparation, earthquake predictability, rupture process, strong ground motion, aftershock sequence, and geodynamics of this inland mega-thrust event, one of the largest inland thrust events ever on record, providing unprecedented opportunity to launch another attack to the difficult problem of earthquake predictability. Moreover, lessons and experiences learnt from this earthquake, as well as other devastating earthquakes, will provide useful information for the preparedness, mitigation, and management of earthquake disasters. This symposium will be focusing on, but not limited to, the study of earthquake predictability and the study of the Wenchuan earthquake, highlighting interdisciplinary communications and application of new technology. After the Wenchuan earthquake, seismological communities were active in organizing joint studies in the perspective of seismology, geology, and social sciences. International and/or regional journals such as EPS, Tectonophysics, BSSA, Science in China (Series-D: Earth Sciences), Chinese Journal of Geophysics, Acta Geologia Sinica, are organizing special issues of the Wenchuan earthquake. In the ASC, AGU, and IGC meetings, among others, special sessions were organized. It will be an appropriate opportunity to gather and exchange all these results during this symposium. ¡¡ Related Meetings 2009 IASPEI Assembly Cape Town Keynote Lecture: Earthquake Forecasting and Prediction: Progress in Model Development and Evaluation http://www.iaspei.org/cape_town_2009/keynote_lectures_2009.html E1 Symposium on Earthquake Sources: Modeling and Monitoring for Prediction E2 Geophysical Anomalies and Earthquake Prediction E3 Prospective testing of Earthquake and Faulting Probability Models http://www.iaspei.org/downloads/cape_town_abstracts.html SSA2009 Global Collaborative Earthquake Predictability Research Statistics of Earthquakes http://www.seismosoc.org/meetings/2009/specialsessions.php and International Workshop on Statistical Seismology http://www.scec.org/statsei6/StatSei6Agenda.pdf EGU2009 Vienna SM4 ¨C Early warning, Prediction & Hazards http://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU2009/sessionprogramme/SM Lisbon Seminar Second International Seminar on Prediction of Earthquakes ¡¡ ¡¡ Related IASPEI Resolutions 1991~2009 ¡¡ ¡¡ Technique Sessions Two special sessions and two regular sessions will be held.
